I still have my engagement ring from M. We were at Lollapolooza 1997 and we were browsing all the vendors for fun. M. dedided to buy me a "fun quickie" engagement ring then and there. We found a jewelry stand and we started looking at rings. I found the ring I liked...a simple metallic-like hematite band. I tried it on...it looked so pretty and perfect. It cost seven dollars. We went back to the people we came with...his two nieces and one of their girl friends who were hanging out by a grassy hill. M. said he just bought me an engagement ring. I beamed with a huge smile and showed them the ring on my finger. They smiled and said, "Wow...cool!!!" It WAS cool. It sort of made our engagement "official." I was sooo happy. A few weeks later, it BROKE while I was taking a shower. I took it off momentarily to wash off my hands and the ring slipped from my fingers and it fell onto the tub's surface. It broked into a few pieces (hematite is delicate and light-weight). I was MORTIFIED. I could not believe I had broke my beautiful engagement ring. I was scared to tell M. I mean, yes, it was only seven dollars, but that was NOT the point. It was MY ring...he gave it to me as a symbol of our love. I freaked out while I was picking up the pieces from the wet tub. I didn't know how to tell him so I just said..."You're going to be mad. I did something." He asked me what I did. I showed him the ring pieces and explained that I accidentally broke it during my shower. To my relief, he smiled and assured me that it was okay...that he would buy me another ring soon. As for the pieces, I kept them in a jewelry box as a cherished keepsake. I wish I hadn't broken it...it was so pretty. I contemplated putting the pieces inside a see-through pendant/locket of some sort and wearing on a necklace. I might still do that sometime.
My second ring from M. was my gold wedding band. We decided on matching gold bands instead of silver, even though silver was getting trendy. We wanted gold because it was traditional. Traditional is cool in instances like that. I was so excited about our rings...about my wedding ring. When we slipped the rings onto our fingers on our wedding day...it was sheer bliss and love. We were husband and wife. Beautiful.
My third ring from M. was my diamond ring. We went looking for a diamond ring last Christmas in December 2000. This is the one piece of jewelry that I have always wanted...the only ring I would ever desire for the rest of my life. When we found my perfect diamond ring...ohhhhhhhh it was so lovely. It is a solitaire diamond ring on a gold band. A solitaire diamond has always been my favorite. It is, in my opinion, the most beautiful style...simple and breathtaking all wrapped into a diamond. And yes, it is traditional also.
So the only pieces of jewelry I wear everyday are my wedding band and my diamond ring on top of it.
Both are symbols of our love for one another.
